Am I doing this right?

Arriving at an emotional junction filled with wondering and loneliness opens up a space of emptiness and a feeling of being trapped. The state of mind is that of an uninhabited island, where a culmination of thoughts opens the gate to questioning one's identity and life at its core.

12 September 2017 was a few days before I went back from Germany to Korea. I had no money left and could not eat properly. In that moment a doubt came up: am I doing this right?

That day I switched on a camera and asked myself questions. Those questions are the only sound in the piece: there is no music, only the text of what I asked.

The piece marks the date on which I arrived in this emotional crisis and reflects on it through a dance monologue: an intimate and vulnerable portrait of a moment in time that might be relatable not just to one individual but to the human condition in general.

Floor to Flow

Workshop for dance schools and studios

Different ways of training the body, and different entrances into movement. Four parts: a warm-up for strength and mobility; floor work, travelling and on the spot, in contact with the floor, relaxed yet stable; improvisation on body awareness, impulse and dynamics; and a choreography that joins urban and contemporary material. From a single guest class to a series, for mixed levels.

Last taught at TanzAreal Karlsruhe, September 2026

With this unfathomable miniature, choreographer Seung Hwan Lee proves himself a master of the absurd.

„Theo Lee“ wirkte so auch als ironischer Kommentar aus der freien Szene über die faktisch marginale Bedeutung von Bühnentanz im Alltag der meisten in der Gesellschaft, trotz seiner hohen seismografischen Wirkmächtigkeit.

Theo Lee also worked as an ironic commentary from the independent scene on how marginal stage dance in fact is in most people's everyday lives, despite its considerable power as a seismograph.

Alexandra Karabelas, Die Rheinpfalz, 30 Sep 2026 · Theo Lee

Quite different was the solo that followed, by Seung Hwan Lee, who worked just as minimally but convinced on every count.

Alexandra Karabelas, Die Rheinpfalz, 20 Apr 2026 · Out of Context

His Masturpiece, fantastically realised with the means of urban dance, turns out to be an inquiry into the meaning of art and the question of whom it serves more: the artist or the audience.

Its creativity and brilliance as dance are a high point of Mannheim's independent dance scene.

Above all, the evening is truly worth seeing for Seung Hwan Lee's contribution, Anibody.

About

Seung Hwan Lee is a choreographer and dancer from South Korea, based in Mannheim. Born in 1991, he trained at the Korea National University of Arts in Seoul and has worked professionally since 2015.

He has made his own work since 2017, starting with the solo Unpaved Road. His question is how you perform something that is not dance: depending on the context put around it, a movement or an action becomes a performance. Repetition, storytelling and staging are where most of his decisions are made, and his pieces start from personal experience and curiosity.

Alongside his own work he has danced at the Gerhart Hauptmann-Theater Görlitz-Zittau, with Norrdans in Sweden from 2019 to 2021 and with La_Trottier Dance Company. His pieces have been shown at raw&polished Nuremberg, ZUKUNFT TANZT Frankfurt, Tanzbiennale Heidelberg, Platform 14 Berlin, Lake Studios Berlin and Theater Felina-Areal Mannheim; Masturpiece : Major Tom toured to Dresden and Mülheim in 2026.

He teaches the workshop Floor to Flow and a morning class in Mannheim, and builds the real-time performance software some of his pieces run on.
